At one end of the rope was the boat and at the other Nellie sat cross-legged, with her chin in her hands, while her pet turtle, a tortoise named Columbus, was basking in the sun. Columbus was a very sleepy tortoise, but when he woke up he always had a look on his face as if he had traveled to some very interesting place, but he was never going to tell you.

Nellie, the girl, was Captain Peabody's daughter, and she missed her father, although she didn't remember ever having met him. All she knew was that his mail was piled up in a tin box in the hallway and that he collected exotic snails...
