"Winter was coming and people would get cold, especially people who were homeless, because they had fled because of hostilities in the countries where they lived, or because their homes, and sometimes their towns or villages, had been destroyed. We wanted to draw the world's attention to these people and raise money to help them stay warm.
I turned to social media and asked people what their own memories of warmth were.
Tens of thousands responded, each with a special memory.
I took their memories and began to weave them into a poem, as best I could. I chose the themes from what people had responded to me. It was a poem about coming in from the cold, about physical warmth and about the warmth of family, of friends, of safety.
The poem was knitted into a long, green scarf. We made it into a film. The wars that had driven people into exile did not stop. In fact, new wars began, and more people fled the places they had lived their whole lives, taking with them everything they could carry.
Once again, winter was coming.
"I gave the poem to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and they, together with Bloomsbury Publishing and the wonderful illustrators of this book, present it to you, in the hope that it may help some people who have lost their homes, or even their homelands, to stay warm this winter and the winters to come."
