The phone call that never happened - Apostolos Doxiadis

While walking with his head bowed, he suddenly sees a "dime" on the ground, a ten-cent coin that was used in America as a telephone coin at the time. He dips the coin in and runs back to the phone booth. He closes the door, grabs the receiver, and drops the coin into the device while his hand goes to the telephone dial. But, just as he's about to dial the first digit of a number, he stops. His facial expression changes from joy to sadness. He lets the receiver hang and comes back out. But why didn't he call?
